Curatorial Research - 2SLGBTQ+ Contemporary Art

As part of my research dissemination, I have an ongoing independent curatorial practice (which primarily takes the form of physical exhibitions, with occasional performance art series and screenings of video art.) Currently, I am assessing the feasibility of a number of different curatorial projects related to the 2SLGBTQ+ identities and histories, as well as (queer) artistic interventions into normative spaces, practices, discourses and aesthetics (including fitness culture, Canadian art histories, and commercial design).

Rights management for small presses

Small presses face extraordinary pressures in 2023 with the news that Chapters/Indigo — the major retail channel for many small publishers — has reported unprecedented losses. To find new income streams to get them through this challenging period, small presses need to be more creative with their existing assets. The task for this project is to review a large number of small-press publishing agreements to analyze what rights the publisher holds (i.e., what rights are available for licensing), what rights have been licensed to date (e.g., translation), and who has licensed them. Although one might assume that publishers are well aware of what rights they have bought and sold, according to one publisher's findings (Halket, 2021), many publishers do not realize that they have valuable assets going under- or undeveloped — and potentially face liabilities by violating the terms of licensing agreements they have entered. This project is a preliminary step in the larger development of a rights management tool for nonprofit publishers.

Level UP- MacEwan- Data sets creation - Phase 8

We would like students to help us with creating content that is aligned with our vision, mission, and sector. We will ensure the student has a clear understanding of what these elements are for our organization. The project is a project that is developing a web-based application to generate synthetic datasets for students. The application is to create datasets either based on tools actual data provided by the user, or the user can create their own customized data sets. The application creates a unique dataset for each studentinstructor, allows the isntructor to create queries, and then marks the students' submissions. The project is composed of three phases. Phase 6: Creating a query builder for the instructor. Phase 7: Develop a process to mark the student's answers to the query. We will provide guidance to all students. Phase 8 : Continuing to develop this marking process

Emerging Indigenous and Racialized Artists Across Canada Research Assistantship

This research project aims to identify the emerging voices in the Canadian art scene, especially those working with new media and deploying interdisciplinary approaches. Further, the project aims to tackle the lack of representation of racialized and Indigenous artists in the field of Art History. In particular, there are gaps in knowledge and understanding of the themes, methodologies, and contributions of BIPOC artists, and research is needed to fill the gaps. I am particularly interested in the Canadian context because recent social movements such as Black Lives Matter, Idle No More and protests over residential schools have had a positive impact on the art world by generating opportunities for racialized and Indigenous artists to participate in residencies, public speaking events, and exhibit their work in artist-run centers, galleries and museums across Canada. Additionally, a number of artists who have not yet found opportunities to exhibit their work in professional art spaces, have developed their own virtual galleries or use social media such as Instagram to promote their work. By looking at the programming of Canadian art spaces and virtual galleries, this research will identify new and rising artists. Moreover, by researching artists' personal accounts and independent groups in social media, the project will fill the institutional gaps. This research will enable me to include the work of emerging Canadian artists of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds into the Art history curriculum at MacEwan. Outputs: the student will produce an annotated database of emerging racialized and Indigenous artists working in Canada.  the student will identify key themes and methods, rather than assuming, as it is often the case, that marginalized artists engage with issues of identity and representation. Outcomes:  developing a greater understanding of racialized artists, the themes they engage with, and their contributions to Canadian art history; updating the curriculum of ARTE 304 Theory of Contemporary Art and ARTE 324 History of Interdisciplinary Art at MacEwan; identifying key raising artists that can be included in the exhibition professor Vergara-Vargas will curate in Montreal in May 2024.

A Scoping Review on the Knowledge Gaps in the Current Literature Critical Race Theory and Anti-Black Racism Framework in Social Work Education, Research, and Practice

This proposed research is a scoping review. This type of methodology seeks to undertake a comprehensive search of the breadth and scope of all available literature pertaining to the research topic and question. The main purpose of conducting a scoping study is to identify gaps in existing literature, to summarize and synthesize research findings from existing literature. The data will be amassed from published peer-reviewed academic publications in English from 2000 to 2022 through key word searches such as ‘social work and critical race theory  and education ,’ and ‘social work and anti-Black racism  and research’  in order to extract relevant data. Some of the electronic databases that would be used are  EBSCO and ProQuest.  The abstract of articles will be reviewed to ensure they meet the  keyword  search criteria. Those that are not a good fit will be eliminated at this stage. This process will be followed by an extensive review of the articles’ content  to complete the final selection of eligible articles. This will be followed by the charting of emergent themes.  The scoping review will be concluded with a written report of the findings.

Producing Victorian Rehearsal Costumes for the Department of Theatre

When historical costumes are worn, actors are better prepared for the physicality of voluminous skirts and rigid bodices if they practice wearing them throughout the rehearsal process. Exploring ways to promote equitable access to post-secondary education phase 2

Students are needed to gather, review, and synthesize information about ways to promote equitable access to post-secondary education. Specifically, students will engage in a literature review and jurisdictional scan. Students will gather and review academic and grey literature to identify (a) barriers to pursuing a post-secondary education and how identified barriers could be addressed at a university setting, and (b) promising practices to promote equitable, inclusive, and accessible post-secondary educational opportunities and ensure that universities are welcoming and accessible for all populations. Related to this, students will also conduct a jurisdictional scan to identify and explore university-based children/youth engagement programs in Canada.

Locating Survivors’ Justice Needs in Post-secondary Responses to Sexual Violence

The last decade has been a period of renewed attention to, and action on, sexual violence on post secondary campuses. Amidst the new policies, programs and responses, we argue that missing from these changes has been critical reflection, research and understanding the problem complexly. In particular, there is a focus in post secondary institutions (PSI) on being “survivor centred” in their responses but very little empirical grounding for what survivors need or want in terms of responses. This is not an easy task as survivors of sexual violence have diverse needs that shift over time and place. This project aims to get a better understanding of the complex needs of PSI survivors and to test a new method for getting at the collective needs of survivors and for empowering survivors to contribute to responses. Using a conceptual framework that understands justice to be multifaceted our main research question is: What varied justice needs do those harmed by sexual violence have, especially in relation to responses on the part of students’ post-secondary institutions? This research project involves two methods of data collection. The first phase involves in-depth, semi-structed interviews with MacEwan students who have experienced some form of sexual violence. While it is important to provide survivors the space to speak to their needs as individuals, justice is a collective, social problem. In order to get at the sociality of justice the second phase of data collection will consist of several small interactive workshops.
