Details

Students from University College of the North have gained a thorough understanding of the day-to-day management and administration of reserve lands, environmental impact issues, and resource extraction processes and policies.

The focus of their studies has included the benefit of use and development of land for individual, collective, and economic purposes and students have additionally gained a foundation in the basic environmental, legal and economic aspects of land management.

This program has offered our students the opportunity to learn about legal and legislative requirements as increased understanding of legislation will reduce risk and improve decision making, which they would be able to apply at your organization in a project.

Project Examples

Projects may include but are not limited to:

  1. Developing and maintaining an environmental assessment plan
  2. Evaluating the socioeconomic impacts, with an emphasis on the environmental component of a project
  3. Conducting community and environmental impact assessments
  4. Understanding and researching land use plans, land codes and legal agreements, including permits, zoning and leasing
  5. Analyzing and assessing the environmental impacts and legal frameworks of development projects
  6. Understanding the traditional use of land, water and resources in communities, and develop strategies for sustainable harvesting of natural resource
  7. Improving community and stakeholder compliance management through promotion, monitoring & enforcement
  8. Becoming familiar with Treaty and land entitlement agreements
  9. Identifying the roles and responsibilities of different levels of governments in the land development process, and be able to access government assistance
  10. Examining and evaluating the impacts of various levels of government policies on land claims, resource use, and governance structures in Aboriginal communities.

Additional company criteria

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

A representative of the company will be available to answer questions from students in a timely manner for the duration of the project.

A representative of the company will be available for a pre-selection discussion with the administrator of the course to review the project scope.
